Figure 1: The tsetse fly transmits sleeping sickness and is a dreaded pest in parts of Africa south of the Sahara. . . The proboscis, large for a fly but indispensable for one which lives by piercing the skin and sucking the blood of warm-blooded creatures, is at bottom, pointing toward the viewer.
