Besides for phase transformation, the SEM has been used to gain information for a variety of studies including environmental, medical, and mineral. This section reveals the realism created by SEM photographs. "An SEM produces images which are readily interpreted because they contain light and shade in much the same way as everyday images which are familiar to our eye" (Chescoe and Goodhew, 1990). This means that holes appear dark and hills will have a bright side as well as a shadow. Some sample SEM images are displayed which apply to the human body and organisms.
