CAT Scans of biomedical applications have recently been extended to nondestructive evaluation of new advanced material systems at NASA Langley Research Center's QUEST System. For details, see reference below. The objective is to observe location and extent of embedded voids and flaws in a turbine fan blade.
With the translucent surface feature in Advanced Visualization Systems software (AVS), it is possible for the first time to geometrically locate ans show the extent of embedded flaws in the turbine fan blade.
It is necessary to graphically interact with this data set to discover all of the voids. Even with transparacy, a shadowing effect occurs that is unique to each part where a human decision is required.
